While in Emmetsburg, visit the world's
oldest BLARNEY CANNERY. The cannery has been fraught with many and varied problems
since it first went into production in 1962. Due to the potency of the Blarney
ingredients, plant chemists were forced to provide a neutralizer. The repellant what
is now being processed has proven to be very effective.
At one point, a massive labor strike caused the plant
shutdown at a most crucial time, shortly before the big St. Patrick's Celebration and
during an election year. On several occasions the promotion parade float was stolen and on
another the important green dye, imported from Ireland, was held up because of an airline
strike.
Faced with all these problems, a
lesser facility would
have closed its doors. But as of today, the plant employs two shifts daily in
order to meet world demand. For those who prefer a product
not so strong, Light Blarney is now being made for the not so bold individuals. |
